Tidewater Virginia's Editorial Response to Change in the Bi-Racial System, 1945-1955
This article examines Tidewater Virginia newspapers' responses to desegregation efforts of the 1940s and 1950s that culminated in the Supreme Court decision in Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka. The four newspapers highlighted are the Norfolk Virginian-Pilot, edited by Louis Jaffe, the Newport News Daily Press, edited by Raymond Blanton Bottom, the Portsmouth Daily Star, edited by Norman R. Hamilton, and the Norfolk Journal and Guide, edited by Plummer Bernard Young.
